Metropolitan Melety told how the UOC is connected with the Local Churches after the Council in Feofaniya and how it implements the Canons of the First-Second Council.

The head of the Department for External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Meletiy of Chernivtsi and Bukovyna, told the French publication Orthodoxie how the UOC is connected with the Local Churches.

“Unity with other Local Churches is implemented through the prayerful commemoration of the Primates of these Churches by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry during the Divine Liturgy,” the bishop said and added, “today our Church actually has an autocephalous statute, which guides its activities, though without a formal autocephalous status so far.”

When asked by the publication how the Canons of the Two-Time Council to commemorate the Patriarch are observed by the UOC, Metropolitan Meletiy said that after the Council in Feofania, “the order of commemoration is more in line with these canons (13, 14, 15 – Ed.) compared with the previous order, when a parish priest would commemorate the entire hierarchy from the bishop to the patriarch.”

“Now, in every diocese of the UOC, priests commemorate their bishop, all bishops commemorate His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kyiv as their head. In turn, the commemoration of the Patriarch of Moscow by our Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry only crowns this system. Therefore, there is no deviation from prayerful communion with the Patriarch, and accordingly, there is no schism either,” the DECR head noted.

Earlier, the UOJ wrote whether the First-Second Council forbids non-commemoration of the Patriarch.
